Why Going Viral Isnβt the Goal: What Really Builds a Successful Social Media Presence
This may ruffle some feathers, but let’s talk about it. π«£
I’ve seen posts go viral for people, and guess what? That viral post didn’t automatically make their account successful. π³
We have to remember that a lot of viral content is usually funny or relatable, and while that’s great for engagement, it doesn’t necessarily *sell* your products or services. π¨
Why Viral Content Doesn’t Always Convert
For example, imagine you own a skincare business, but you post a funny meme about marriage. That meme might rack up thousands of views, comments, and shares—but will it lead to sales? Probably not.
That’s because the viral video had nothing to do with your actual *niche.* Sure, you might gain new followers from it, but are they interested in skincare? What happens next if they follow you for more funny memes and don’t get them?
π Less engagement.
I always see this complaint: *“I had a reel go viral, but then my next five posts flopped!”*
Here’s why. ππΌ
Those five posts were likely related to your niche—your products, services, or expertise. But your viral post attracted people looking for entertainment, not necessarily what you actually offer. That’s why their engagement drops once you go back to regular content.
The Real Goal? Building a Loyal Audience
Going viral shouldn’t be the goal. π«
Instead, focus on growing an audience that is genuinely interested in your brand, products, or services. An audience that is engaged, loyal, and ready to buy.
Because what’s the point of millions of views if none of them convert into customers? π
What to Focus on Instead of Virality
Rather than chasing viral fame, shift your strategy to:
π₯ Creating valuable content – Educate, inspire, and solve problems for your audience.
π₯ Engaging with your audience – Build real relationships through comments, DMs, and interactive posts.
π₯ Being consistent – Show up regularly so your audience knows what to expect from you.
Time and time again, these strategies have helped me and my clients grow strong, profitable social media accounts. ππΌ
So, let go of the obsession with going viral. Instead, build something that lasts. ππ»
